Puppies grow and develop very quickly. Did you know that a puppy’s critical socialization period ends at about 14 weeks of age? It is crucial that your puppy gets to know his new big world during this time through controlled positive experiences and gentle exposures.

In addition to appropriate and thorough socialization, new owners also have to juggle everyday training challenges like house training, curbing puppy nipping, crate training, and basic skills and manners.

Let Chewed Shoes Dog Training guide you through all of the key components to raising a puppy in the best way possible. We’ve got all of the tricks of the trade and the advice you’ll need. Start as soon as you get your puppy!

About Us

Leanne Falkingham is an animal trainer certified through the internationally renowned Karen Pryor Academy. She brings not only practical training skills, but empathy and compassion to her client-focused business. Leanne’s extensive training background includes 20 years of experience working with shelter animals.

While rehabilitating a New York shelter in 2006, Leanne implemented a positive reinforcement training program.  She discovered that clicker training was the best way to reach dogs that were shut down, scared, or trapped in patterns of unwanted behaviors like jumping up, mouthing, barking, and aggression. Many of the shelter dogs had been intimidated and harmed by harsh training methods before coming to the shelter. Her force-free approach of positive reinforcement training, and harnesses instead of prong collars, built trusting relationships between the dogs and their new caretakers.

In 2008, Leanne enrolled in the Karen Pryor Academy for professional trainers, and graduated with distinction as a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP). She subsequently shifted her career from managing shelters to serving as a Behavior and Training Manager in two New York shelters and one Chicago shelter, working hands-on with thousands of dogs and cats and hundreds of adoptive families.

Since 2012, Leanne has focused on private dog training, helping individuals and families to live harmoniously  with their dogs. She focuses both on basic foundation skills and complex behavior cases.

In addition to being a KPA CTP, Leanne is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA), and a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). In 2013, Karen Pryor Academy launched the online course, Shelter Training & Enrichment, co-authored by Leanne and Steve Benjamin, KPA faculty member.
